A time to honor the creativity, resilience, and impact of women entrepreneurs across the country and especially here where women-owned businesses are a vital part of our economy.
According to U.S. SBA State Profile women own 50,909 businesses in Maine with approximately 45,000 of them being freelance or sole proprietors. In Hancock County, U.S Census quick facts states that there are 340 woman owned employer firms. Although sole proprietor and freelance entrepreneurs are not included in the census report, based on patterns across rural Maine, it is estimated that an additional 1,000 to 1,500 woman owned sole proprietorships operate in the county.
Women-owned businesses drive local innovation, provide jobs, and enrich community life — from makers and shop owners to service providers and consultants. U.S. Census data compiled for a report, 2018 State of Women-Owned Businesses, commissioned by American Express indicates that women-owned businesses in Maine have shown remarkable growth: between 2002 and 2018, revenue from women-owned firms grew by more than 280%, and employment in these businesses grew by more than 70%.
Interestingly, in the state, even though the actual number of woman-owned business didn’t grow as quickly as the national rate, the growth rate for the period ranked number 1 in the nation as revenue and employment (job creation) from woman-owned businesses here in Maine far outpaced the national average.
Let’s meet some of the women whose sense of community, entrepreneurial spirit and determination have helped shape the business climate in the region.

I’m Carolyn Corro and in 2016 when I started making candy and baked goods out of my home for friends and family, never in my wildest dreams think I would be wholesaling my goods to local shops. Fast-forward a few years, I now own a café and candy store, The Sweet Spot, on Main Street in Ellsworth. Anytime there was a roadblock in my way I rolled up my sleeves, worked harder and figured out how to get around it. Giving up has never been an option in my mind.

Women in Business Resources
The Maine Women’s Business List.
The list was initially created in 2020 to provide more visibility for woman-owned businesses across Maine. Because business registration at the municipal, State or Federal level does not include a checkbox for gender, it can be challenging to understand the breadth and depth of the businesses run by female entrepreneurs. If you’re looking to hire a woman owned firm or if you’d like you own woman-led firm to be listed, visit The Maine Women’s Business List. https://mainewomensbusinesslist.com/
